Wroxham 5km Series 2009 – Race 2, Wednesday 24th June

This was a race of two halves with UEA Trojan team mates Glen Watts and Nick Earl dominating from the start, pulling further ahead with every step to cross the line in a fast time of 15:00.  A decisive surge saw Watts pull 7 seconds clear over the closing stages, with Earl, the recent Guy Fawkes 10K winner, in second place 51 seconds ahead of 3rd placed James O’Neill at the finish.

Ideal conditions saw Glen and Nick shave over 20 seconds off their Race 1 winning times, but that was nothing compared to Norwich Road Runners’ Simon Millett who knocked 50 seconds off his PB (it must be love?) to take 4th in 16:08 ahead of fellow Road Runners Wayne Utting and  Andy Bunn.  Andy surprised himself with a competitive run after 2 months off with a hip injury and with little training mileage under his belt.

CoNAC’s Sean Atterwill took a fine 7th in 17:02 to take the Junior Prize, but a blur of Red and Yellow saw Kelly Rushton battling every inch of the way in a blanket finish with fellow CoNAC runners Damien Rogers, John Walshaw, Rob Scotter and Stephen Balfe to be the leading Lady with 18:06 in 21st place overall. Other notable – sub 20minute performances from the ladies saw Dena Parfitt 19:17 for NNBR, Emily Armstrong recorded 19:20 – a PB in her first outing wearing a Norwich Road Runners vest & our own Elies Mann, 19:42 also clocking a deserved PB.  Hazel Wilson representing CoNAC won the Ladies Junior prize in 21:13

Other category winners were John Walshaw, Mick Yaxley, Robert Cheverton, Ray Hill & Ken Bowman for the men and Jude Durrant, Dena Parfitt, Beres Ward, Audrey Batchelor and Brenda Kinch for the ladies. Team Prize winners were: Simon, Wayne, Andy & JP Fulton scooping the Senior Prize for us, whilst CoNAC claimed the Masters Mens, Ladies and Senior Ladies trophies.

Whilst most of the field revelled in the fast flowing course, at the back, 31 Great Yarmouth Road Runners set off, walking round, in tribute to ‘Brooky’ Paul Brookshaw who sadly died earlier in the month whilst out on a morning training run due to an undiagnosed heart condition.  All the Yarmouth runners crossed the finishing line amid cheers and applause from fellow competitors and a tearful hug with his wife Tracey.  Paul’s daughter, Kayleigh is urging all runners to see their doctor for regular check-ups.  Take note!

UEA Trojan runners dominated the first of Norwich Road Runners Wroxham 5K series on Wednesday night with Glen Watts storming home in 15:22 from Nick Earl and Richard Henderson completing the 1-2-3 10 seconds behind.

Glen’s run was all the more impressive given two days earlier he had a highly successful BUPA London 10K race, (where Mo Farah set a new British record) to finish 19th ahead of Beijing Olympic Marathon Champion Constantina Dita in an International field of 12,500.

From the gun the UEA team led with Norwich Gazelles Paul Higham and Conac’s James Preston running side by side with them over the first half of the race before Watts made a decisive move to power home to a comfortable win.  The effects of a recent illness saw James Preston fade to finish 4th almost a minute behind the winner.

In equally dominate form was Ipswich Jaffa runner Helen Decker who sprinted away from the rest of the women’s field to mix it with the chasing pack to eventually finish 8th overall hot on the heels of Junior winner Ben Stratton in 17:00, which is a new women's course record.

The UEA team’s jubilation was diminished slightly as they missed out on the Team prize as race winner Glen Watts entered under his first claim team of Shaftesbury & Barnet Harriers and not UEA Trojan, deigning them the necessary 4 male runners!

Strength in depth saw 3 team prizes go Conac’s way for Senior Men’ for James Preston, Ben Stratton, Sean Attwell & Mica Richards, ‘Veterans’ Andy Bunn, John Walsham, Robert Chereton & Nigel Hodge with their Veteran Ladies winning too with Jane Clarke, Sally Withey & Sue Cook completing the line up.  Pride was upheld for the organising club as their Senior Ladies team of Elies Mann, Michelle Bull & Jo Godwin were victorious.

Race 2 is on Wednesday 24th June at 7:15pm

Success in Flora London Marathon PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 08 May 2009

Whilst Mara Yamauchi was gaining all the plaudits in the National Press for her fine run in Sunday’s Flora London Marathon local club the Norwich Road Runners had 27 entrants of which 15 had never run a Marathon before amongst the 35,747 starters, and they all completed the course! Despite the warm spring weather Simon Dobbs and Roddy McGregor set a hot pace throughout, Simon just leading home in an impressive 2:42:41 with Roddy in his foot prints in a Personal Best of 2:43:05.

Also under the 3 hour mark was Mark Betts, back in great form from an injury enforced lay-off to record a PB in 2:47:50 with debutant Marathon runner Steve Gibbs crossing the line in 2:59:36 cheered home by his wife and young son. The strong contingent also comprised of Club Chairman Paul Sullivan whose consistent Marathon run continued stopping the clock at 3:01:05 with Emma Appleton first lady back completing the course in 3:42:02 passing Jon Bird, 3:42:27, towards the finish as he hit the wall and had to walk much of the 8 miles! Emma’s time was even more inspirational bearing in mind she only took up running in July last year.

Marathon virgins Marie Clark and Julian Allaker soaked up the fantastic atmosphere from the cheering 750,000 spectators and ran beyond their expectations smiling and waving their way to 3:42:44 for Marie to Julian’s 3:44:03. Next in was Mark Merryweather 3:49:32 ahead of Lisa Godwin 3:54:10, Alex Smith 3:55:27 and Nils van Minden 3:56:41.

It was a triple success for the Millett family; for, as Tony crossed the line just ahead of wife Anne – 3:59:23 to 4:02:08 – youngest son Simon was tearing around the streets in the hilly Sheffield Half Marathon finishing an impressive 19th overall out of 4,591 finishers in a PB of 1:14:33, over 4 minutes off his previous best.

Other Club finishers included Kevin Powles 4:20:29, Andy Crook 4:03:24, Stuart Gandy 4:22:50 who was late with his pre-Marathon preparations after he fell off a kerb damaging an ankle, knee & hip, Sarah-Jane Firman 4:26:51, Steve Websdale 5:02:42, Melanie Allen 5:05:03, Rebecca Houston 5:08:07, Jemma Green 5:15:33, Clare Denzey 5:16:23 who only secured her place at the start of the year when one Club Entry runner was forced to pull out. Successfully completing the course despite the heat and sunshine which was in stark contrast to the up to 16 weeks winter training was Anna Thurlow 5:46:56, Sarah Barker, through work commitments had to do most of her training by her self recorded 5:46:05 and Kelly Mitchell 5:48:49.

The top 5 Norwich Road Runners men together with Emma & Marie all qualified with ‘Good for Age’ times guaranteeing them entry to the Virgin 2010 London Marathon on 25th April.

Club Records Smashed PDF Print E-mail

Two of the junior men's club records have been broken recently by Ben Russell. At the Chilly Willy 5k race in Peterborough on 8th March 2009, he set a time of 16 min 40 sec and came home in second place.

Then just a week later Ben tackled the longer half marathon distance at our own Broadland Half Marathon, and clocked a new record time of 1h17m48s. This was enough to place Ben sixth overall in the race.

For the ladies, Rachael Leathwood smashed the senior ladies marathon record by several minutes at the Bungay Half Marathon on 19th April, coming 8th overall in the race too, in a great time of 3h07m56s.

...and finally in this feast of record-breaking this spring, Tracey Curl set a new V45 ladies club record at the Friskney Half Marathon in Lincolnshire in a time of 1h27m19s, coming home as second lady in the race.

You can find details of all the club records here.
